Improvisations solo au violoncelle et violoncelle préparé.

Après un hiatus de 10 ans chez Ambiances Magnétiques, le violoncelliste improvisateur Rémy Bélanger de Beauport présente un album couronnant une année de recherche et d’enregistrements à Berlin. Fortement inspiré par un magnifique instrument de l’atelier berlinois de Julia Dimitoff, l’artiste nous donne à entendre le son du violoncelle sans artifices, sans overdubs à l’exception de la dernière plage qui consiste en une écoute simultanée de deux prises, une stéréophonie déchirante et de trois autres pièces pour violoncelle préparé. Le corps du musicien investi l’instrument produisant des sons inattendus, parfois grinçants, parfois lyriques, toujours en mouvement.

Exigeant, l’album s’ouvre sur Piolet-traction, long mantra de sons répétés qui pose les balises des recherches du musicien sur le son et la technique instrumentale. La pratique de l’improvisation chez Rémy Bélanger de Beauport est un travail de réflexion intense qui n’a rien à envier à une musique écrite. Quoique abstraites, ces œuvres sont coiffées de titres juste assez évocateurs alors que celui de l’album, D’éclisses, fait référence au matériau premier de l’instrument et à la respiration de l’archet. Cet enregistrement porte la signature forte et raffinée d’un jeune artiste québécois au parcours atypique.

Solo cello and prepared cello improvisations.

Nearly 10 years after his last release on the label, free-improv cellist Rémy Bélanger de Beauport is back on Ambiances Magnétiques, this time with a solo album done after one year spent researching and recording in Berlin. Greatly inspired by the fantastic instrument found in Julia Dimitroff’s Berlin workshop, he offers the unprocessed sound of the cello, without any overdubs except for the last track which features the simultaneous playing of two recordings in rocking stereophony, and three tracks on prepared cello. The musician’s body fuses with the instrument, producing unexpected sounds that are at times grating, at times lyrical, and always on the move.

Demanding, the album opens with Piolet-traction, a long mantra of repeated sounds that sets the stage for the musician’s research on sound and instrumental technique. For Rémy Bélanger de Beauport, the practice of improvisation is intense reflexive work that has nothing to be ashamed of in comparison to written music. Although quite abstract, the tracks were given titles that are just evocative enough for the listener while the album title D’éclisses (in English: Of/From Shards) refers literally to the instrument’s raw material and the breathing of the bow. This recording bears the strong and refined signature of a young québecois artist with an atypical path.
